What is generative AI?

What is generative AI?
Generative AI is an exciting branch of artificial intelligence designed to produce brand-new content--like images, videos, text, or even audio--just from a simple description.
It’s designed to help you:
Generate content with simple prompts.
Generate realistic images from textual prompts.
Create videos or animations based on scripts.
Write articles, reports, or summaries.
As a business user, generative AI can help you with:
Content creation: Writing blogs, creating social media posts, or designing promotional materials.
Task automation: Generating reports, summarizing meeting notes, or drafting contracts.
Customer interactions: Enhancing chatbots with natural language responses or personalizing customer communications.
(c) Copyright Microsoft Corporation. All rights reserved.
How does generative AI work?
Learning from Large Datasets
Generative AI models learn patterns from vast amounts of data to generate accurate content. This learning enables understanding of complex inputs.
Classification vs Generative Models
Classification models categorize information, while generative models create new content based on input prompts. Both serve different AI functions.
Human Language Understanding
Generative AI replicates human language, making interactions natural and accessible for users with various technical skills.
User-Friendly Tools and Templates
Prebuilt AI tools and templates simplify use, allowing business users to leverage AI without programming knowledge.

Generative AI and Microsoft 365 Copilot
Microsoft 365 Copilot is an AI assistant integrated into apps like Word, Excel, and Teams, using Large Language Models and Microsoft Graph to access organizational data such as emails and calendars.
This combination enables Copilot to:
Generate new content (emails, documents, presentations)
Summarize meetings and chats
Analyze data and visualize insights
Automate workflows and repetitive tasks
Support decision-making with contextual recommendations

The difference between work and web-grounded modes
Copilot Chat uses web data by default. With a Microsoft 365 Copilot license, it can also access your work data, which is why you’ll see both Work and Web tabs in the interface.
In work mode (work-grounded), Copilot Chat uses Microsoft Graph to ground responses in your organizational data, giving you access to files, emails, meetings, and other Microsoft 365 resources.
In web mode (web-grounded), Copilot Chat uses Bing’s web data with generative AI to provide up-to-date insights for research, brainstorming, and staying informed.

How to chat in 3 steps
1. Enter your prompt
Enter your detailed prompt in the text box at the bottom. If you would like Copilot to source information from any reference files, you can upload them in your prompt by selecting the “Add content” button.
2. Check sources
Copilot Chat is transparent about the sources of its information. See these sources listed underneath the answer.
Vet these sources and validate your answers.
3. Continue the conversation
You can ask follow-up questions as you would in a conversation. You can refine the answer too.
For example, try “Write a shorter answer" or "Give me more detail." You can also select suggested prompts.
